11 Years at the Top

The 2011/2012 English Premier League Season saw the end of an era for my beloved Blackburn Rovers. 11 consecutive years in the top flight for a club smaller than most Championship Clubs let alone Premier League ones is an achievement in itself, but the roller coaster ride experienced throughout the several campaigns has left us all with grey hairs. What is has also left us with are a range of memories to remember this era of football. Every single one of us will remember something different, so I have provided my 11 memories for our 11 Years in England's top flight.

11) 15th April 2009- Liverpool v Blackburn

One of the most emotional scenes ever experienced, with Blackburn Rovers' former Liverpool player Stephen Warnock laying a wreath in front of the Kop, marking the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough Tragedy. Rovers supporters joined Liverpool supporters to mark this date, and Warnock provided the final touch.

10) July 2003- The Signing of Brett Emerton

For many years, I was often asked, why Blackburn Rovers. Why support a team you have no affiliation with at all. Prior to this date, I would tell my story. The signing of Brett Emerton meant this story was no longer required, all I had to say was "Emo" and people would understand. Many years followed, I bragged and bragged about how versatile "Emo" was. I talked about his work ethic and how much he loved wearing the shirt. Not once did I say he was the most talented player in the world, as boy he isn't, but what "Emo" brought to the Rovers jersey was the Labore, the hard working, never say die attitude. Not to mention a few neat goals along the way.

9) 1st February, 2006- David Bentley Hat trick v Manchester United

Only a day after signing a permanent contract with Rovers following a successful loan spell, David Bentley scored the first Premier League hat trick against Manchester United in one of the most impressive performances in a Rovers shirt.

8) The Tugay Compilation

Someone once said Tugay never scores tap-ins. Boy where they right. The Maestro pulled the strings in midfield for Rovers, and also kept the Goal of the Month judges busy with several long range screamers. His down to earth mentality was a joy to behold, quickly becoming every fans favourite footballer

7) 5 February 2009- John Steven Taylor passes away

Tragedy struck at The Britannia after John Steven Taylor passed after an incident during the EPL match between Blackburn and Stoke. The father of one was well known within the Rovers Supporters group, a loving father and caring partner.
R.I.P John Steven Taylor

6) 7 November, 2009- Blackburn 3 Portsmouth 1

Whilst some might just skim over this as another match, I will always remember this match as the game where Benni McCarthy gave big Sam Allardyce a taste of his own medicine. After being made out of favour from the start of the season, Benni McCarthy came on at half time as Rovers were trailing to strugglers Portsmouth 1-0. Inspired by the entrance of the South African and Jason Roberts at the break, Rovers rose from the dead, turning one of the worst halves in EPL history into a massive 3-1 victory.

5) 17 November, 2004- Jack Walker Statue

It took a long time coming, but on a glorious afternoon, The Jack Walker Statue was unveiled at the Blackburn End of Ewood Park, located within the new Jack Walker Memorial Garden. Funded by donations, the Statue would serve as the everlasting memory of "Uncle Jack".

4) 1 March, 2007- Benni McCarthy v Arsenal

86th minute, 5th round Cup tie sitting at 0-0, Benni McCarthy stepped up to the plate. Battling second season syndrome, McCarthy struggled with his fitness all season, but boy did he step up and score a stunner

3) 24th February, 2002- Blackburn win the Worthington Cup

Making an appearance in a major final for the first time in 74 years, Blackburn Rovers defied the odds, overturning a red hot Tottenham outfit 2-1 on our first season back in the Premier League.  Goals to local hero Matt Jansen and Andy Cole ensured Rovers would claim the trophy and head into Europe

2) 2009/2010- The East Lancashire Derby

It was the game that was circled on every bodies calendar. The East Lancashire Derby. And it did not fail to live up to expectations. Goals Galore, with a stunner from the Dingles to get us underway followed up by goals to David Dunn, Franco Di Santo and Pascal Chimbonda. A late scare could not halt the celebrations, Rovers winning 3-2 and the reverse tie 1-0 courtesy of a David Dunn penalty.

1) 24th May, 2009- Tugay's Farewell

The last game of the 2009 season saw Ewood Park's favourite son Tugay retire. The Turkish midfielder contributed so much to football at Blackburn, he was provided a standing ovation post match as he completed his lap of honour. Brought a tear to the eye.

Venkys- Lying from the Top!

When Balaji and Venkatesh Rao walked out onto Ewood Park, saluting the faithful, many saw the new owners as a shining light, leading Blackburn Rovers back to the glory days. Or at the very least, ensuring Blackburn became a financially stable and successful club. Fast Forward 18 months and you look back at what was a speck of light in a dark room.

The Rao family have had several opportunities to get in favour with Rovers supporters. However all the fans have ever been told are lies, after lies, after lies.

Simply where do we start?

The Ultimate Lie. The Ultimate Insult.

"We will absolutely respect the Jack Walker legacy and will be actively supporting the organisation to ensure that Blackburn Rovers remains one of the best-run clubs within the Premier League."
BBC Nov 19, 2010

In their tenure as Owners of Blackburn Rovers, The Venky's Group have completely ruined the financial security of Blackburn Rovers Football Club. They have shown absolutely no respect to the legacy left behind by Jack Walker and have not "actively" supported the club, all going against what their initial promise was.

From the initial statement came the dismissal of Sam Allardyce. Whilst many had differing opinions on Sam at the time, 99.5% of fans would take Sam Allardyce back now within a flash. Venky's chairwoman, Anuradha Desai believed a new manager would be required for Blackburn to push onto the top 4.

"We want good football and Blackburn to be fourth or fifth in the league or even better. The fans should trust us because this is in the best interests of the club."
Lanc Tele Dec 14, 2010

In the very same article, Ms Desai discusses searching for a new manager, whilst giving Steve Kean the job on a temporary basis.

"It could now be a couple of months before a new manager is put in place. Right now Steve Kean will take over while we are looking for someone to take over on a permanent basis."
"Our thinking now is that it will be a British manager, but we are open if there is an outstanding candidate: someone who would be really, really good for the club."
Lanc Tele Dec 14, 2010

Only weeks later, Steve Kean was appointed manager on a permanent basis until the end of the Premier League Season.

"Venkys London Limited-Blackburn Rovers- has decided to continue with Mr Steve Kean as manager, until the end of the season, June 2011"
ESPN Dec 22, 2010

16 months later, Steve Kean is still in a job, despite one of the worst managerial records in Premier League History.

What could be one of Ms Desai's most open lies was the very fate of one of the most respected Chairman in the game, Mr John Williams.

"I know that John Williams was very close to Sam but their situations are very different. John is safe."
Lanc Tele Dec 14, 2010

Come February 14, John Williams was gone after agreeing a compensation package with Venky's. The reason for Mr Williams' departure is still unknown, but one can just turn to the leaked document highlighting John's concerns at the manner the club was being run.

Who could ever forget the ever so embarrassing saga, the pursuit of Ronaldinho. Balaji Rao was ever so adamant that Blackburn would sign the Brazilian as their marquee man, so confident he withdrew interest with David Beckham!

"Yes we were trying to get Beckham, then we went lax on it as we were pursuing Ronaldinho. Nevertheless, I assure you we'll get a big name playing for us pretty soon."
Lanc Tele Jan 19, 2011

"We are bidding for Mr Ronaldinho, We've already made a bid of 7.2 million Euros and we're in negotiations."
Sky Sports Jan 4 2011

Fast Forward 6 months and a few red faces later, Balaji looks to have had a change of mind!

"I am not into any name game. I want to concentrate on the proper game and get ahead (In reference to transfers)."
Goal July 8, 2011

Another worrying concern for Rovers fans is the constant lies about the transfer budget. If you cannot stump up the big $$$, don't say you can, and this is exactly where Venky's have failed

"There is more than 5 Mill (Pounds) available to him. I would rather not say how much, I will say that when the time is right, but I can say there will be a lot more than 5 mill."
Tribal Dec 21, 2010

Steve Kean also apparently had 30 million to spend in the 2011 Summer window, with many big name players to be targeted, to no avail
Lanc Tele June 27, 2011

After a meeting with the owners, Steve Kean soon pronounced the following RE the budget.

"It was important to know what type of budget we had and it's very healthy. The wage bill won't be cut, there will be funds available."
"It's a very competitive budget. Miles bigger than Rovers have had in the past."
Tribal May 21, 2011

With all the above mentioned lies, there is another which hurts Rovers fans just as much as the lie at the very top.

"We're here to stay with the club. We're not interested to give it to anybody. It's like our baby. Money is not everything to us. The passion is there and we don't want to let the fans down."
