He is Back. He is sorry and once again it is his last chance. Todd Carney. One of League's most talented playmakers, yet one of the most controversial player to grace the league in the modern era. His actions on the field, are unfortunately overshadowed by his actions off the field. Even his Dally M achievement in 2010 has been overshadowed by a behavioural problem, often relating to the consumption of alcohol.
For those who are not aware, this is Todd Carney's Rap Sheet
December 2006- Contracted to Canberra, charged for Drink Driving in Goulburn, license suspended for 5 years
May 2007- Despite being disqualified from driving, Carney was charged for failing to stop when instructed by police, negligent driving and driving without a license
July 2008- Carney was suspended for allegedly urinating on a man at a Canberra nightclub (accusation was withdrawn but Carney remained suspended)
August 2008- Contract terminated by Canberra
Late 2008- Failed to gain a work permit to play for Huddersfield in England due to drink driving offences
2009- NRL declares they will not register Todd Carney in the 2009 Season
February 2011- Faced low range drink driving offences
April 2011- Suspended indefinately after a drunken incident involving team mate Anthony Watts
Not a healthy rap sheet for the misguided star.
It has not been all negative over his short, yet explosive career, with a few highlights along the way
2008- Selected for Country Origin
2010- Dally M Winner, Five-Eight of the Year, Provan-Summans Award
2010- Grand Finalist
2010- First Australian Cap
So where to now for Todd Carney, the 2010 Dally M medalist. The Sydney City Roosters believe he is ready, re-instating him in their line up against the Cronulla Sharks for this weekends fixtures. Was the 3 week break sufficient? Carney does seem to appear to have the backing of his team mates, with veteran fullback Anthony Minichiello coming to Carney's side, saying that the embatteled five eight has undergone all the right steps over the past few weeks, hoping his issues are dead and buried, able to return to his footballing best which guided the Roosters to the 2010 grandfinal.
What do the Roosters do now? An alcohol ban did not work at Canberra, and a no alcohol policy only occurs at the Roosters for injured footballers. And what if Todd Carney is not ready. What if Todd Carney comes under the shining lights yet again for the wrong reasons. Will the Roosters do what Canberra did, and show the man the door?
Or will they show the troubled five-eight, something he has stated after every single misdemeanour, one last chance....
I used to like him but his ruining the reputation of NRL players. They'll give him more chances as long as his playing well...b****es!! Thats discrimination! (please excuse my language).
ReplyDeleteI find him really overrated. He has that x factor everyone talks about, but Mitchell Pearce is the man running the halves, not carney
ReplyDeleteOkay this guy has had too many chances given to him.. If it was any other player they would have gotten kicked out straight away! The NRL should really properly step in here, put their foot down and stop this nonsense.
ReplyDeleteGo the Doggies!!
Mitchell Pearce is the go to man, you are right with Carney being more of an X factor!
ReplyDeleteAgreed Mr Beat Geek! Though what role does the game have in assisting Carney as a person, outside of football?

ReplyDeleteI don't think he is ready; three weeks is not long enough. The one statement that stood out to me was that "doctors believe that being involved in football is the best thing for him to stay away from alcohol." Really? Hasn't he been involved with football all these years already and look at that rap sheet. How did football not keep him out of trouble all these years already?
ReplyDeleteIMO it would serve him well to be away from football for a longer period, somewhat like Ben Cousins was from AFL, completely removed from the game and all the fanfare around him being involved in it. Let's face it; it's NOT a normal life he's living, it's far from normal and it would probably be fair to say that MANY men would NOT cope with the pressures these young stars are under.
I don't think these doctors or the club have Carney's best interests at heart and I believe that although his team mates THINK they do have his best interests at heart they are misguided in believing so. My concern for Todd is that he will become the NRL's Brendan Fevola; branded and condemned for the personal demons he was never truly given the support he needed to overcome.
