Pitch invaders are unfortunately a common sight in global sports. Whether it be the cricket, football or basketball, their is often one intoxicated spectator out to make a name for himself. But when a spectator attacks an athlete, the situation turns nasty.
A Dutch cup fixture between Ajax Amsterdam and AZ Alkaamar had to be abandoned after a set of unusual circumstances. The pitch invader, a 19 year old local, stormed onto the pitch, flailing out at AZ goal keeper, Esteban Alvarado. The Costa Rican goal keeper retaliated, landing a few hefty kicks on the pitch invader. After being restrained by team mates, referee Bas Nijhuis dismissed Alvarado, infuriating the Goal Keeper and AZ Alkaamar players, whilst the opposition looked on, clearly stunned by what just happened.
Manager Gert Jan Verbeek ordered his team off the pitch, with the playing group refusing to return to the pitch, with the official declaration being, "in fear of their safety". Whether this was the case, or it was a matter of disgust in the sending of off their team mate is unknown, but if somebody attacks you, you should be entitled to defend your self.
